International Baccalaureate
We are pleased to announce that Newtown Friends School has recently been approved as a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Program (MYP) and is pursuing authorization as an IB World School. IB World Schools share a common philosophy - a commitment to improve the teaching and learning of a diverse and inclusive community of students by delivering challenging, high quality programs of international education that share a powerful vision.
NFS has embarked on this momentous endeavor because we believe there is a broad overlap of goals and ideals between the International Baccalaureate and our program. You’ll see this represented in the mission statements of both organizations:

NFS Mission Statement
Newtown Friends School provides a dynamic curriculum through which students learn to think critically, collaborate peacefully, communicate effectively, and lead with character and compassion. Rooted in Quaker values, the rigorous education at Newtown Friends School instills the confidence and conviction to succeed in a changing world.
IB Mission Statement
The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and learning. These programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
The IB Learner Profile (at right) states that “the aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.”
It is precisely these attributes we seek to impart to our NFS students. Becoming an IB school, and offering the MYP in grades sixth through eighth will allow us to become a member of the most prominent and successful international secondary educational organization in the world. For more than 70 years, NFS has prepared its students to be strong and compassionate leaders. We are now continuing and formalizing a commitment that ensures that NFS students learn and thrive in a connected and globally-minded learning environment.
