Learning Environment

Challenging students to cultivate a better world.
At Newtown Friends School, we purposefully create a learning environment where middle schoolers can truly thrive.

Everything we do is designed with the student in mind, from the dynamic curriculum and attentive faculty to the encouraging culture.

At NFS, students enjoy hands-on, interactive classrooms and a comprehensive academic experience.

  • Math & Science: Students take core academic subjects beyond textbooks. They might be programming robotic vehicles in the science and design labs or using linear equations to solve real-life consumer needs in math class.
  • Writing & Languages: Students sharpen their creative skills by engaging in book clubs in English, acting out student-written plays in Spanish, or writing essays supported by analysis of primary documents in social studies.
  • Distinct Electives: Sixth graders enjoy weekly art and music classes. Seventh and eighth graders choose from a range of elective courses. Students can explore interests in musical theater, tech studio, diversity, coding, and visual arts.

Our curriculum is intended to prepare middle schoolers for the rigors of high school and beyond. And you can be confident that your child will be fully supported as they rise to the challenge of higher academic expectations.

What Sets Us Apart

Families appreciate our middle school program for much more than the high-quality academic curriculum.

At NFS, we want to strengthen those valuable life skills that will prepare your child for success in high school, college, and a career.

Parents choose NFS for the following reasons:

  • Quaker Influence
Your child will experience tremendous growth in character through the Quaker values of Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality, and Stewardship reflected in our positive school culture. Middle schoolers enjoy numerous service learning and leadership opportunities on and off campus.
  • Healthy Relationships
Students want to develop relationships with mentors and peers, get involved in many activities, and feel like they belong. From clubs and electives to athletics and field trips, middle schoolers have multiple opportunities to make friends and stay connected to the community. • Key Life Skills
Our middle school program incorporates important skills that will pay dividends for our students in school and life. In addition to critical thinking and problem-solving skills, students learn the importance of self-advocacy, initiative, collaboration, empathy, and self-discipline.

Your child will be ready and equipped to perform at the next level. And we will come alongside them to ensure they experience all the benefits of belonging to a community.

Social and Emotional Wellness

Setting them up for success — today and tomorrow.
Everything we do at NFS is designed to help your child thrive. Our middle school graduates are confident, competent, and compassionate individuals ready for high school.

Our commitment to social and emotional health is a big component of that success.

  • Stronger Community
Advisory groups of 12-15 students from all three grades meet three times weekly to work through the Developmental Designs curriculum. It’s an approach that helps students form close bonds with peers and develop strategies for managing social pressures and academic challenges.
  • Purposeful Mentorship
Students develop meaningful relationships with each other and the trusted adults around them. Advisors handle the everyday challenges of adolescence with compassion, experience, consistency, and humor. Students remain in the same advisory group for three years, and their advisor becomes a crucial connection point for the family and an advocate for the child.
  • Student Empowerment
The groups provide students with a level of freedom while instilling a sense of ownership in their education. Middle schoolers feel encouraged, valued, and much more engaged in learning.
