Parents Association

The Newtown Friends School Parents Association (PA) is our parent volunteer organization dedicated to cultivating community at Newtown Friends School.
It serves to encourage parents’ interest and involvement in the school and supports the school's mission in the areas of community-building within the NFS community and sponsoring fundraising activities throughout the year.

All parents and/or guardians of students enrolled in NFS are members of the PA, and all meetings of members and committees are conducted in the manner of Friends.

Parents are encouraged to participate in PA events through announcements made in the weekly Tuesday Update.

PA Committees and Volunteer Opportunities

List of 12 items.

  • Fall Fest

Our first community event of the school year, this fun-filled day provides an opportunity for the entire school community - students, parents, alumni, faculty, staff and friends - to enjoy fall activities including hayrides, pumpkin painting, food, and many other games and activities.
  • Auction

The school's largest fundraising event is the biennial auction and dinner, held at a nearby facility every other spring.  The evening includes a wonderful assortment of silent and live auction items of goods and services donated by the NFS community and local businesses, and one-of-a-kind artwork created by the students. There are many subcommittees for volunteers to choose from--acquisitions, sponsorships & advertisements, decorations, catalog and closing, to name a few.  Menus, locations, and formats change from year to year. New ideas and volunteers are welcome!
  • Book Fairs

Held twice a year, these fairs offer popular children's books, specific selections from NFS reading lists, and a selection of Quaker books. The fall fair allows children to browse the fair during specified slots of time during the school day to purchase books on their own or compile wish lists, which are kept at the check-out along with teachers' classroom wish lists. Parents may accompany their children at these times or come on their own any time the fair is open. The spring fair is held during Alumni & Family Day when parents and children can shop together. Parents are needed to serve as cashiers, straighten books, and point children in the right direction.
  • Cash Back Programs

The PA receives funds from a number of cash-back programs.
  • Pot Lucks

Join fellow NFS parents in grade-specific friendship building activities that get classmates and their families better acquainted. Organize a pot luck or volunteer your home.
  • Baking

This committee furnishes refreshments for a variety of PA and school events.
  • Lunches

As a convenience for families and a fun alternative to bag lunches for the children (in addition to raising funds), the PA provides a varied menu of salads and sandwiches on Mondays and Fridays, pizza on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and pasta on Wednesdays. Since NFS does not have food service facilities, the program provides delicious, high-quality lunches for our students and depends on parent volunteers who help serve lunches on a regular basis. Many volunteers find helping with lunch fun, as they can not only meet and talk with other parents but also see and hug their children. Sign-up forms are available twice during the year in August and November.
  • Alumni & Family Day

This event brings the entire school community together - students, parents, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends - for a day of entertainment, crafts, food, fun, and games.  Enjoy the student art show, flower sale, and the spring book fair at this spring community event.
  • Story Time

Volunteers read stories to pre-K and kindergarten students once a week throughout the year.
  • Teacher Appreciation

To thank faculty and staff for their hard work, the PA treats the faculty, administration, and Pennswood Pals to a special luncheon on an in-service day in the spring. This is a fun way for parents to thank the teachers and staff for all they do for our children!
  • Film & Discussion Series

This event brings NFS parents together in engaging discussions around an inspirational film.  The film series includes a simple dinner and a movie, followed by a post-screening discussion.  Volunteers help to plan this new event.
  • Graduation

Volunteers coordinate refreshments and flower arrangements for this special day.
