Newtown Friends School Celebrates 75 Years 1948-2023 Celebrating the Light in Every Child

It is with great excitement that we announce our year-long celebration to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of Newtown Friends School.  Our history dates back to 1948 when Newtown Friends School was founded by Newtown Friends Meeting who envisioned a school “working for a deeper appreciation of the value of each individual, both in school and in society as a whole.”  Through the efforts of several inspired leaders and generous supporters, our school opened in September 1948 with 5 faculty and 58 students in grades Kindergarten through sixth, under the leadership of our first Head of School, Amelia W. Swayne.

For 75 years, Newtown Friends School has continued to instill in our students a love of learning, a capacity to think critically, and to meaningfully contribute to the world they inhabit.  Our enrollment has grown and facilities have changed, but our guiding Quaker values of simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality, and stewardship have remained.  Today, our program is defined by dedicated teachers and best-practice classroom experiences, including fine arts, athletics, field trips and service opportunities.  As we look to the future, we are proud of the legacy of our founders and all those who continue to support our important mission.

“Celebrating the Light in Every Child” has been chosen as the theme for the 75th Anniversary, aligning with the mission of NFS.  It will be reflected in the activities and events that will occur throughout the celebration year including a third volume of a commemorative publication of the school’s history.

A 75th Anniversary Student Celebration was held on Friday, January 6th to kick off the festivities.  Students received an anniversary t-shirt to wear and enjoyed a special assembly and a day of fun activities.

Our 75th Anniversary Gala/Dinner, Dancing and Live and Silent Auction was held on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at Lambertville Station, NJ and was a great success.  Thank you to Amy Peruzzi, Clerk of the Gala, the Auction Co-clerks and committee members, sponsors, and guests for their participation and support of this special fundraiser.

Thank you to everyone who attended the 75th Anniversary Community Celebration on Saturday, May 13th.  Family-friendly activities, complimentary food and gifts, and music made for a fun and special day for the school.  The program started with a special performance by the NFS Ensemble, followed by remarks from Head of School Dana Harrison, former NFS Heads of School Steve Nierenberg and Dirk Dunlap, and Keynote Speaker, Rajesh De ’87.  The 75th Anniversary Commemorative book will be available in early June.

Stay tuned for more 75th activities that are being planned for the fall.  Please join us in marking this special milestone at events throughout 2023.  We look forward to celebrating with the entire NFS community!
