Learning in Action at Honey Hollow

Our 3rd grade students recently took their learning beyond the classroom with a field trip to Honey Hollow as part of their International Baccalaureate (IB) unit on ecosystems!

As students explore the natural world, they’re building a deeper understanding of how living things depend on one another and how human actions impact the health of our planet. This unit connects science, math, reading, and social studies, helping students make meaningful connections and understand the interdependence of people and the environment.

Through research using texts, videos, and data, students are strengthening their inquiry skills and expanding their knowledge of ecosystems, biodiversity, and human impact. They’re also learning to communicate their ideas clearly, listen to different perspectives, and use evidence to explain why ecosystems need protection. Through persuasive writing, letters, and multimedia projects, students practice sharing their ideas and advocating for solutions that protect our planet.

💚 Caring: Developing empathy for plants, animals, and the communities that depend on healthy ecosystems while learning the importance of environmental stewardship.

📚 Knowledgeable: Building research skills, exploring local and global ecosystems, and making interdisciplinary connections that deepen their understanding of our natural world.

🌎 Risk-Takers: Collaborating with classmates, expressing ideas with confidence, and using evidence to communicate why ecosystems need protection and how we can all make a difference.

At Newtown Friends School, learning extends beyond acquiring knowledge. We empower students to ask questions, think critically, connect ideas across disciplines, and take meaningful action as caring, informed members of their communities.
