Students from Newtown Friends School’s 7th and 8th grades recently embarked on an unforgettable cultural and language immersion trip to Costa Rica, deepening their understanding of global citizenship, sustainability, and community.
A highlight of the journey was a meaningful visit to Monteverde Friends Meeting and School, where students connected with peers, shared experiences, and reflected on the Quaker values that unite their communities across borders. This spirit of connection continued during a visit to their sister school in San Luis, where students engaged in friendship-building activities and participated in service work, strengthening bonds and broadening perspectives.
The trip offered rich opportunities for cultural learning. Students spent three days living with Costa Rican host families, practicing Spanish in authentic settings and gaining insight into daily life. They also visited the indigenous Bri Bri community, where they learned about traditional chocolate-making processes and the cultural significance behind them. A hands-on tortilla-making class gave students another taste of local traditions.
Exploration of Costa Rica’s natural environment was equally impactful. Students toured a pineapple plantation and a coffee farm, where they learned about sustainable agriculture and the importance of responsible farming practices. Adventures included ziplining through the rainforest canopy, relaxing in natural hot springs, and embarking on a night hike through the Monteverde Children’s Eternal Rainforest, where they experienced the biodiversity of the region in a whole new way.
Throughout the trip, students embraced new challenges, built lasting friendships, and returned home with a deeper appreciation for Costa Rican culture and the interconnectedness of our world.
