Our 1st Grade Market was a joyful celebration of learning in action!
Our 1st Grade Market was a joyful celebration of learning in action!
In this culminating event for their International Baccalaureate unit, students brought their handmade goods to market, thoughtfully selling to friends and family. Through this experience, they explored the Central Idea: People around the world trade goods to meet their needs, and these choices affect our lives and the Earth.
Throughout the unit, students investigated how economic activities impact both people and the environment, as well as how organizations are structured and function. By engaging in role-play, field trips, and collaborative classroom simulations, they learned to see markets from multiple perspectives—balancing personal wants with the needs of a community.
Our young learners demonstrated growth as:
Balanced thinkers - making fair decisions and considering how their choices affect others and the planet
Knowledgeable in action - explaining how goods move from producers to consumers and understanding the roles within a market
Principled participants - making responsible and sustainable choices while showing respect for people, materials, and the environment
This unit integrated learning across disciplines—students reflected through reading and writing, applied math skills to count and compare goods, expressed ideas creatively through art and music, and even used Spanish to communicate needs and observations. Field experiences helped bring these concepts to life in meaningful ways.
We are so proud of our 1st graders for connecting their learning to real-world systems and for showing care, curiosity, and responsibility every step of the way.
